To those dealers who predicted a negative outcome, the opening evening of New York’s Tribal and Textile Fair on 14 May 2008 must have come as a pleasant surprise. The show got off to a good start, with a healthy crowd and a number of dealers reporting sales within the first few hours.

Morris & Co: The World of William Morris

Christchurch Art Gallery, in New Zealand, pays tribute to William Morris (1834-1896) in the exhibition ‘Morris & Co: The World of William Morris’, which runs until 29 June 2008. Drawn from the extensive collections at the Art Gallery of South Australia, this is the first major exhibition of Morris & Co. designs, textiles and furnishings ever to be seen in New Zealand.

‘Blue’ at the Textile Museum, Washington

Jenny Balfour-Paul reports from Washington DC: “Next time you pull on your jeans, recall their humble origins and their adventuresome history”, proclaims the first label in ‘Blue’, the Textile Museum’s excellent current exhibition of indigo-blue textiles (until 18 September 2008). The introductory exhibits are, of course, ‘Levis’. Despite the age gap, the latest trendy eco jeans, with recycled buttons and rivets, are just like the 1890s’ pair; and both were dyed with natural indigo.
