Dorotheum Rug & Textile auction, 25 February 2014
The auction ‘Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries‘ at Vienna’s Palais Dorotheum on 25 February 2014 (4pm) offers a selection of pieces from many different countries. Turkmen rugs with traditional patterns, in very good condition, from a Hamburg collection will be on sale. Carpets from the Caucasus, Anatolia and Persia will also be offered, in addition to a large number of Chinese carpets and textiles of museum quality.
One of the highlights is a silk Heriz from around 1870 (Lot 7). The unusually large carpet (242 x 195 cm) shows a scene of Persian mythology. It has been known as the demon’s carpet, represented by the branches of the Vaq Vaq talking tree that end in animal and demon faces. The head of the demon (Div) sits in the crown and at the end one pair of lions and one of rhinoceroses is shown. This is an exceptionally rare piece in very good condition and has been estimated by Dorotheum expert Wolfgang Matschek at €40,000 to €60,000.
