This publication introduces for the first time the extraordinarily rich yet previously unknown British collection of Turkmen tribal carpets, rugs and trappings by Neville Kingston. The exceptional private collection forms the departure point for an exciting account of the development of the Turkmen weaving tradition, which lies at the heart of Eurasian textiles. Through Elena Tsareva's extensive study of the art of Turkmen carpets, informed by archaeological and historical data, a complex picture of Central Asian textiles emerges, showing how every epoch contributed to the fundamentals of carpet weaving, enriching it with new motifs, compositions and techniques.
About the Author
Elena Tsareva has devoted her life to the study of the archaeological textiles of Eurasia, with an emphasis on the origin and development of knotted carpet weaving and the history of costume. Elena Tsareva is presently a senior researcher of the ethnography of the Middle East and Central Asia in the department of South and Southwest Asia of the MAE, and of the history of textiles in these regions.
