Kaitag Daghestani Silk Embroidery, An Italian Collection presents a remarkable private collection of Kaitag textiles, the distinctive embroidered art form of the Kaytagsky district of southeast Dagestan. Made using laid and couched silk floss stitched onto a cotton ground, Kaitag designs often draw on the visual language of classical Safavid Persian art, depicting horsemen, hunting scenes and bold abstract motifs. Most surviving examples date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.Compiled by collector Ziya Bozoglu, with an introductory essay by Robert Chenciner and David Hunt, this richly illustrated volume brings together 82 colour plates from the collection, offering a deeper understanding of these rare textiles and the traditions behind their creation.
About the Author
Ziya Bozoglu is an antique textile and carpet dealer specialising in the woven arts of Anatolia, the Caucasus and Central Asia. With over forty years’ experience in the trade, he began his career in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar before establishing a gallery in Perugia in 1990. Over the course of his career, he assembled an important personal collection of Kaitag textiles from Dagestan, which forms the basis of this book.
