Christie’s London, Rugs and Carpets, October/November 2016

The autumn sees rugs and carpets of note included in three different Christie’s London sales. First up on 13 October is a 17th-century Esfahan carpet in the ‘Gordon Watson: The Collector‘ sale at South Kensington.

A few days later, on 18 October, the 157-lot main autumn Islamic-week sale of ‘Oriental Rugs and Carpets‘ includes a good selection of antique and collectable oriental rugs of most periods and provenances. Amongst them are a spectacular early Khotan rug from a German collection, a late 18th century Mughal pashmina ‘millefleurs’ carpet with an unusual chevron patterned field, a Gansu pu’lo medallion rug, a spectacular 19th century Agra, and two quite similar part-silk Tekke Turkmen embroidered asmalyks, in good condition. And for those who seek something completely different, there is a fine Saltillo serape.

The London rug season ends at King Street on 3 November, in the first part of the ‘Noble and Private Collections’ sale, with a large early 19th century Axminster carpet, consigned by the National Trust at Hanbury Hall, Worcester.
