Tapestry, Carpets & Textiles, Christie’s London, April 2017
The last week of April 2017 sees the textile arts represented in three separate Christie’s auctions. First, at King Street on on Tuesday 25th, ‘Noble & Private Collections I’ includes a number of European tapestries, notable among them a 16th century Franco-Flemish Millefleurs fragment. Also at King Street, on Thursday 27th, is ‘Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds including Oriental Rugs and Carpets’. This is the first Christie’s Spring Islamic Week season in decades in which a small group of classical and later rugs (some very good examples among them) are relegated to the end of the main Islamic art sale (which also includes a few fine Turkish and Persian textiles), rather than as a separate catalogue and auction. Sad, but a sign of the times in which the major international auction houses on both sides of the Atlantic are to a greater or lesser extent disengaging themselves from the routine carpet market, except for high profile single collector offerings. The third sale, ‘Arts & Textiles of the Islamic & Indian Worlds’ is on Friday 28th at Christie’s South Kensington (perhaps for the last time as the Brompton Road rooms are said to be closing), where the consignment includes a group of high quality Shahrisyabz and Nurata suzanis.
