Preview: Collection of Rugs and Textiles from American and European Estates, Nazmiyal Auctions

Nazmiyal Auctions is set to sell 113 lots of antique and vintage carpets on Thursday 18 June 2020. The lots on offer provide a glimpse of current taste in the interior design and top-end retail market for antique and vintage rugs. Nazmiyal Auctions’ June sale provides an opportunity for buyers to purchase pieces that represent the trends in interior design taste but also offers a convenient way for sellers to access the international auction market.

The sale offers the widest range of antique and vintage material currently available in the auction world including collectible village and tribal carpets from the Caucasus, Persia and Anatolia alongside room-size furnishing carpets and 17th and 18th-century silk embroidered textiles of similar provenance mounted and ready to be hung. The European carpet weaving tradition is particularly well represented in the form of large carpets from the French workshops of Aubusson through to 20th-century carpets made in the royal weaving ateliers of Real Fabrica in Spain, and the studios of renowned Swedish designer Märta Måås-Fjetterström.

Nazmiyal Auctions recently added Elisabeth Parker, former head of the carpet department at Christie’s, New York, to its team. Elisabeth’s job will include preparing condition reports and helping designers with enquiries as well as selecting and cataloguing pieces for inclusion in the sale.

The previous auction on Thursday 6 February 2020 contained a number of high-profile lots that sold above estimate including a Serapi that fetched $32,500, with Moroccan carpets performing particularly well. This sale has a similar scale of estimates ranging from a few hundred dollars for a Chinese Art Deco rug and Turkish kilim up to $20,000-40,000 for lot 6098, a spectacular 5.79 x 3.66 m (19’ x 12’) Persian Serapi carpet.
