Entrance to First Glance-Second Look, Denver Art Museum
Dale Carolyn Gluckman writes: Following the resounding success of ‘Cover Story’, the exhibition marking the opening of the Denver Art Museum’s spacious new Textile Art Gallery in 2013, curator Alice Zrebiec has again highlighted the DAM’s permanent collection. The examples of the quilter’s art in ‘First Glance – Second Look’ include well-known masterpieces from the collection as well as recent acquisitions never before on view, among them several quilts donated by Central Asian textile collector Guido Goldman.

Zrebiec’s imaginative presentation, detailed descriptions and analysis invite the viewer to look again and discover new appreciation for the technical ingenuity and optical effects of these domestic creations. The exhibition, until 19 April 2015, is accompanied by a 100-page, self-titled catalogue that includes a brief history of DAM’s quilt collection, an explanation of quilt-related terms, and illustrations of all the pieces in the exhibition plus additional DAM quilt treasures. It is available online through the museum shop.
