Christie’s Oriental Rugs and Carpets, Autumn 2014

Christie’s autumn carpet sales season in London begins on 1 October 2014 in South Kensington with a rather shadowy but undeniably noble Safavid ‘Polonaise’ carpet with sought after Rothschild provenance in their European Noble and Private Collections Part II sale. The main action however is in their Oriental Rugs and Carpets sale on 7 October 2014 at the King Street saleroom, where a well known and very beautiful member of the select group of Mughal millefleurs prayer rugs is expected to be top lot. Among other consignments of quality, from across the rug belt from Spain to China, the sale includes unsold lots consigned by an ‘Asian Collector’ a year ago, in October 2013, now at reduced estimates, that make some fine pieces, including four ‘Beshir’ prayer rugs, look very affordable. And there’s another fine Turkmen embroidered asmalyk. Viewing will be from 3-6 October.
