The first exhibition funded by this endowment is opening on 18 September 2015, curated by Dr. Sabiha Al Khemir, the DMA’s Senior Advisor for Islamic Art. ‘Spirit and Matter: Masterpieces from the Keir Collection of Islamic Art’ will showcase more than fifty masterworks from the collection, assembled over the course of five decades by the noted art collector Edmund de Unger (1918 – 2011). Named after the British mansion where it was once housed, and consisting of almost 2000 works that span 13 centuries, the rarely exhibited collection is on loan to the DMA for 15 years. ‘Spirit and Matter: Masterpieces from the Keir Collection of Islamic Art’ will remain on display to July 2016.
