Austria Auction Company presents Fine Antique Oriental Rugs III
The third instalment of Austria Auction Company‘s sales of ‘Fine Antique Oriental Rugs’ will be held on Tuesday 16 September 2014 at 2pm at the Novomatic Forum, Vienna. Viewing will take place from 13 – 16 September and online bidding will be available via liveauctioneers.com. The sale, of over 240 lots, consists of antique rugs and carpets from the Caucasus, Turkey, Persia, Turkmenistan and Central Asia. Many of the pieces have been previously published and come from private owners and collectors in Germany and Austria.
The focal point of the sale is the collection of Prof. Dr. Gunther Marschall, who collected antique Oriental carpets in the 1950s and 60s, purchased from noted dealers such as Bernheimer Munich and Dr. Ulrich Schürmann. This is the first time the Marschall Collection has been exhibited and sold to the public and had remained in storage for the past forty years. More than half the sale is dedicated to this collection (130 in total), of which many have been published in books such as Schürmann’s Caucasian Rugs (1969), Teppiche aus dem Orient (1976), and Werner Grote Hasenbalg’s Der Orientteppich (1922). With the published carpets setting a benchmark for quality, AAC’s third sale looks set to be the strongest to date.
