Lady and the Unicorn
The Lady and the Unicorn tapestry series, from the Musée de Cluny in Paris, is on show at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia until 24 June 2018. It is only the third time the tapestries have left France since their creation around 1500. The six sumptuous masterpieces can be viewed as an allegory of the five senses: sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell—plus a sixth ‘internal’ sense: heart, desire or will. The tapestries display the coat of arms of the commissioning family, the Le Vistes of Lyons. Of exceptional quality and originality, they were rediscovered in the 1840s in the Château de Boussac in Creuse, central France, and were purchased by the French state.
