Rippon Boswell’s regular Spring sale of collector carpets and textiles in Wiesbaden is normally held in the second half of May. This year, due to the German auctioneer’s highly successful extra sale of the first tranche of the Vok Collection of suzanis and kilims in March, it has been scheduled rather later in the calendar than usual. Among a typically broad selection of good quality collectable rugs and textiles from all regions, many of which are consigned with enticing estimates, a number of pieces stand out. The selection of Caucasian material is excellent, although perhaps not surprisingly given the numbers of Uzbek embroideries and Turkmen rugs recently on offer, the Central Asian material is less prominent than usual. Lots to look out for include:
Lot 145, a small format 17th-century Ushak Lotto rug with the ‘kilim’ style field design, estimated at only €4,700.
Lot 100, a superb 19th-century Heriz silk rug with a tree of life design, estimate €42,000.
Lot 101, a Tekke Turkmen main carpet, and lot 154, a C-type Star Kazak, both estimated at €18,000.
Lot 170, a classic second half 17th-century west Anatolian ‘Transylvanian’ double-niche rug, estimated at €17,000, and a ‘Transylvanian’ prayer rug, lot 125, estimated at €10,000.
Lot 74, a Kashmir moon shawl, estimated at €14,000.
Lot 183, a Tekke khalyk, estimated at €7,000, and a Saryk kapunuk, lot 113, estimated at €6,000.
